Sary Chelek Reserve

Sary-Chelek State Biosphere Reserve is included in the international network of UNESCO reserves. It is located in the valley and on the slopes of the Chatkal and At-Oinok ranges. The reserve covers an area of 23.9 square meters. km It was created in 1959 to preserve the flora and fauna of walnut-fruit forests and high mountain landscapes. The reserve is a beautiful lake Sary-Chelek, which is the third largest in Kyrgyzstan. The lake with fresh water covers an area of about 5 square meters. km and has a maximum depth of 246 m. The name of the lake translates as “Yellow Bowl”. In the autumn it is very beautiful when the trees around get a yellow-orange color, and, reflecting from the surface of the water, the lake itself “becomes colored”. In the valley there are 6 more small lakes and a rather wide river network. The physical location of the Sary-Chelek reserve determined its mild climate: it is warm in summer and little snow in winter. A significant part of the reserve is occupied by walnut, apple and pear forests. The fauna of the reserve is rich. Muskrat, red deer, fallow deer, porcupine, marten, argali, wild boar, ibex, as well as 157 different species of birds live here.
